Observed in nature, composed in the studio

Fearnley visited Switzerland in 1835 and made detailed studies of the glacier and surrounding landscape. In the finished painting, he combined these observations into a carefully composed scene. The mountainsides became steeper, the light more dramatic and the contrast between the cold ice and living vegetation more pronounced.

The result is both grand and calm. It captures the Romantic idea of nature as something beautiful, powerful and slightly overwhelming.

“The highlight of Thomas Fearnley’s Swiss landscape paintings.”
