A Mediterranean moment by a Norwegian painter
Thomas Fearnley travelled widely through Europe during the 1830s. His journeys introduced him to landscapes very different from those of Norway, including the cultivated gardens and sunlit architecture of southern Europe.
Painted around 1834, Pergola with Oranges shows a sheltered walkway beneath orange trees. Sunlight moves between the columns and foliage, while the path leads the eye deeper into the garden. The result is warm and inviting, yet carefully structured.
The original is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, which records the medium as “oil on paper, mounted on canvas.”
